This fall, The Museum of Modern Art takes on the daunting task of curating a design show that takes fashion as its focus with “Items: Is Fashion Modern?,” an exhibition of 111 items of clothing and accessories that helped change the world.

With today’s designers releasing up to six collections a year, items of clothing can often appear outdated before they even hit the selling floor. By placing the spotlight on clothing and accessories that defy trends, the fascinating question MoMA poses helps us examine our relationship with what we choose to wear, our social customs, and our global values.

Of interest to our readers, there are a small number of watches included in the show: a 1970s Rolex Datejust and a selection of Swatches from the brand’s archives. We here at Watch Journal would like to make some additional suggestions, because, like the other well-known items depicted here, not only have these timepieces defied trends, they’ve become significant icons themselves.—Stephen Watson
